Yes, the app is very useful. But... coming back XIY-PVG-DTW-DCA a few weeks ago the app showed the bag checked in XIY, but nothing more. When I got to DTW it wasn't on the belt and there was no indication of any activity after checkin so a DL agent in the customs hall told me to go through immigration and report it missing at DCA when I arrived. Lo and behold I checked the app on the DTW-DCA flight and DL had brought the bag through and put it on the plane. So although the app showed nothing from XIY to DTW, it still showed up when I got home.
