Actually here's what I have seen and would advise what people should do.
Checking monitor? Don't be so sure, I have seen flights (most likely regional international flights) switching gates in the last minute without displaying new gate numbers on the monitor.
This was back in 2012, I was waiting for flight at Gate 226 (the end of the concourse), the flight to AER was next to us on the monitor shown as Gate 225, I saw all the passengers showing up at 225 and believed they changed the gate again so whoever showed up at 225 ended up running toward another end of concourse. A testament of how screwed up and disorganized TK can be at IST. Hopefully they've figured things out and improved this part of the operation.
If I'm connecting any flights (particularly regional), I'd be checking monitors, showing up at the gates at least 40 minutes prior based on the monitor, and be ready to run if there's last minute gate change again.
