There may be one decent alternative, which is to leave the stuff in left luggage at AMS. There are (or at least were) good self-service lockers and (I think) also a manned service.

If you were to do this, you would remove the risk that - however long you left at LHR for the connection - your AMS-LHR would be so late that you had insufficient time to come out, collect the stuff, and check it in.
