Next day connection or different London airport will work, but simply saying "please don't through check it to my final destination" is going to fail from many US and Canada airports.
Funny you should mention YVR, my other ex-EU "cheat" was YVR. Not a problem.
If they refuse, that is all well and good. Then they will offload it after a no-show, and you get it after waiting a while.
You could say you have alcohol you are taking to a friend in London.
