I have tried searching the forum, but can't seem to find a clear answer to this question:

I am looking at making an ex-EU trip to the US with my wife, probably out of AMS. We plan to take a short holiday of 2-3 days in Amsterdam before flying outbound to the US via LHR. We will need outdoors/hiking gear for our stay in the US, but don't really want to trail this to AMS, so I had hoped to leave bags in left luggage at LHR for the time we are in Amsterdam.

If we do this, would we be able to pass through customs and immigration then check in bags for the onward journey from LHR, even although that is in the middle of an outbound itinerary? Has anyone had experience of doing this?
