The only thing I might say in defense of the OP's friend is that since it's award ticket, he/she may have simply had to take what UA offered, an earlier/different routing may not have been available.

Also I disagree that protection on a later flight is "rarely" done nowadays. I've had it done on each of my last 2 trips during August.
