As BA had no mid haul at the time then it seemed an attractive idea to offer the long haul product which made them go from the worst to the best business class product on this route.
Yes, that was the reason. But BD, SU, UN premium cabins were/are tiny compared to BA's longhaul planes. SU can command a premium for its 20/36 J seats, while BA has F and W in addition to J on its longhaul aircraft.
Now that BA has midhaul fleet, it makes perfect sense to utilize it on DME services if BA thinks it will lose out to competitors if they revert to an all SH fleet.
