I think it is a marketing ploy... never understood keeping the same flight number on a route where all pax must get off midway and change to a different aircraft.

Oh, because it is the same flight number, just be aware that your MQMs will be calculated solely by LHR-DFW instead of LHR-ATL-DFW.
