Do you have miles to upgrade them, or are you willing to pay to upgrade them?

It's only worth paying to upgrade to a fare class from which you can use miles if you actually have them and the reward seats are available. In which case you should line it all up before committing the money.

If you're hoping for a free upgrade, park the hope. VS doesn't do that.
