There's a huge difference between cheap and good value. I'll fly BA when I feel I'm getting better value than the competition. That includes a calculation of the mileage value I'll accrue on my program of choice for the airline selected. BA stopped rewarding loyalty a while ago, first turning their loyalty program to a rewards program and then removing availability of the most valuable rewards.
I don't disagree with what you are saying, I am only making the point that a large proportion of flyers are not as interested as us here on FT or indeed interested at all in a FF programme and just want to get from A to B as cheaply as possible and BA want a part of that market.
Some of these people would regard us as mad paying around twice the price for a CE ticket over a ET ticket just to gain access to a comfy seat, food and a drink which could be purchased for much less elsewhere in the terminal.
