You get one firearm without extra fees. It's when you travel with more then one that you have to pay extra fees. There's extra paperwork/costs involved, they're happy to do it for one. The fee is to deter you from bringing multiple firearms, thus increasing processing time.
Is it extra firearm, or extra firearm case? The Delta website states one case with up to 4 long guns or one case with up to 5 handguns. That's the issue...well that and if it's legal to combine them.
