Not weighing in here except to say that the sky is indeed open between the US and Canada; any Canadian or American airline that wants to fly direct between the Canada and the US is allowed to do so. (Obviously fifth/sixth/seventh freedom flights (e.g. CX JFK-YVR) will depend on trilateral air agreements between the US, Canada, and the third nation.)
