Wait, they're saying they waived the change fee to get you from economy back into first class? That's not a change that would ever have incurred a change fee in the first place. Their position is absurd and it's worth pointing out. At this point, I'd just ask for a refund since they've changed your original itinerary significantly, and if they go on insisting that it was a voluntary change you should just charge back to your credit card and file a DOT complaint letting them know that AA is engaging in unfair business practices since they're either lying or incompetent. Then you can re-book your preferred itinerary at the current, cheaper fare.

(Also, even if you don't want to do any of the above, if the difference in fare between your original ticket and the new, cheaper fare is less than the change fee then you can absolutely get them to re-ticket you on the original itinerary and any residual value should carry over.)
