Everyone gets the screening Canada wants at HKG. At YVR, those continuing to JFK get routed into the boarding gate area (instead of to Canada Immigration) where they are given the TSA treatment by CATSA before people joining CX888 at YVR get let in.
Customs/immigration will be performed during the stop in YVR; they will then arrive into JFK as domestic passengers rather than having to clear immigration on arrival
