I had my left knee re-built with rods, screws and all other lovely hardware. I am 6 feet tall (or short in terms of German standards ). I have flown post surgery in brace and with crutches and it got me absolutely.....nothing, nada, zero, zilch!

So, my 11.5 hours from Europe to LAX were somewhat excruciating to say the least. I personally feel that just like cops and medical professionals (which I have worked in both fields) -- airport and airline employees have heard it all. Your situation is certainly legit and I share your concern. However, people are devious and will go to any length to score anything for free. As such, I can also understand that the employees are pretty tone-deaf to humanitarian appeals. One just has to look at all the wheelchair miracles in airports nowadays.....Amazing.

My personal bit of advice.... try to book your seat in the back of the bus. Often those rows go not completely filled, and you might luck out with an empty seat next to you.

Best of luck in your journey and a speedy recovery after your surgery. ^
