It's my understanding of this that as long as the fare class is available you can change into it.
As I write this, I can see how this might not make sense...buy whatever and then eat the change fee to get the flight leaving tomorrow for the long adv. purch. fare. That would be a helluva loophole.
I've done this many times, but it's possible that I've only done this on returns and not outbounds.
So maybe I stand corrected. Sorry.
I would say it is likely you have only changed returns. Originating flight changes will cause the entire ticket and advance purchase to change to current levels. Now of course, if the fare hasn't changed and there is no advance purchase requirement, it would even itself out.
