Unlike e-tickets today, paper tickets from back then didn't just disappear at the one year mark. This changed around 2001/2002. They also didn't have requirements to cancel or lose value. The ticket back then in general always retained value, even if there was no longer a reservation associated with it. Today with everything actually being stored in the computer (e-ticket) we've given complete control to the airline who now can simply get rid of the ticket.
