EX: TUS-LAX is about a $400 Y flight. Or 25,000 AA miles. Or 9,000 Avios.

Avios are also fabulous for short hops around Europe on BA/IB/VY.

FCO-BCN on VY was also 9,000 Avios I believe.

Distance-based award chart means good for shorter flights, bad for longer. Also, ironically, avoid Avios at all costs when LHR is included per the taxes.
Since Avios can only be used when an AA MileSAAver is available, the fair comparison TUS-LAX is 12,500 AA miles vs. 9,000 Avios.
I believe that tigerhunt2011 was quoting the mileage/Avios required for a roundtrip Coach SAAver award. (A one-way Coach SAAver award on the LAX-TUS nonstop would cost only 4,500 Avios.)
