Not sure what your figures are based on especially the amount of Avios. However, yes on the whole the taxes and charges on long haul economy class redemptions are a joke on all but a few occasions.

You can usually find a cash ticket flying with another airline on an indirect routing at not much more cost. It's even got to the stage where buying a cash ticket in CW can work out to be better value than using Avios.
