Thanks all, the trip is in late October, I was worried having 2 tickets booked for the same day might cancel one or other. I'm glad to know this is an option.

The award ticket is RT connecting through SFO so I have to use the return to at least get to SFO and then I'll just pay for the one way ticket on the direct flight back to JFK. Trying to change the award ticket didn't work as the amount of miles went up substanially.

Next year will make this much easier with the 1 way award option.
