I made a change to an award booking today and took the opportunity to ask the friendly agent about changes. So, to answer my earlier question..

Allowed:

• Change date and time
• Change to another flight of the same airline (not sure about changing to/from a codeshare)

Not allowed:

• Change origin
• Change destination
• Change connection point for connecting flights (i.e., cannot change LHR-FRA-CDG to LHR-MUC-CDG)
• Change to another airline (again, not sure about codeshares)

If you want to do something that's "not allowed", then you need to cancel and rebook. For changes, they charge 20e plus any differences in taxes (no difference in my case).
