Possibly the possessions of the passengers would only impede their evacuation and not others. I don't think there is an obligation to protect people from their own stupidity.
There was so much crap at their feet I imagined that they'd trip over it as they tried to get to the aisle and thus getting in my way so I'd have to step over them. I could of tripped over them and fallen over too.
