Question on booking an alternative flight, when I already have an award ticket
Hello,
Did a Quick search but couldn't find the info I was looking for.
My SO and I are traveling on award tickets in about a month.
He just found out he has a mandatory meeting the Monday a.m. we are set to return, our award ticket has us flying back SFO to JFK connecting and not getting in until almost 10 a.m. which was fine since we were both just going to go into work late.
Now he has to be back for a meeting, there is a direct red eye that will get us in 6 a.m.; however changing the award ticket increases the mile redemption significantly, but I can buy the one way ticket very reasonably.
I was going to buy the one way ticket for the return portion from SFO-JFK direct and still travel on the award ticket out. Then on the return when we get to SFO just get on the direct red eye flight and not the original award ticket.
I called the Diamond desk to see if they could work with me on the miles, but the new redemption is the new redemption. I asked about booking the one way ticket, the rep said I wasn't suppose to do that, but it shouldn't be a problem.
the "shouldn't be a problem" part is what worries me.
Any experience? suggestions? cautions?
Thanks
