What are good alternate routes to/from (lower) Manhattan to avoid the Van Wyck?

I've had a taxi use Woodhaven Blvd. from the LIE to Conduit Ave. which seemed to work ok. Yesterday, I tried the Belt to Conduit Ave. and then Bushwick/Broadway to the Williamsburg Bridge which a little slow, but still ok. The other route I've tried is the Cross Island to the LIE.

Any other suggestions? Thanks...
