I wasn't able to score any tix to MAD or BCN unfortunately. In the end I skipped Europe and am flying direct to IST. My flight leaves from Toronto and arrives at 745am and my onward flight it 1030pm.

The only cities with late evening departures to IST were BRU and MAD. MAD didn't have any low-level availablity.

In the end I decided against stopping in BRU as I didn't want to arrive in IST at 330am and have to sort out a hotel and taxi and all that.

After IST I have another 20 hr layover in Cairo, where I'll finally get some shut-eye!
