The VW has (probably from the beginning of time) been known for big delays northbound and southbound. Now that the major construction project is in full operation (including lane closures and lane splits), even extending northbound beyond the Kew Gardens Interchange, 30 minute delays from (a)the Long Island Expressway (when the SB backups begin around 4 pm) to Atlantic Ave. (b)NB from the belt parkway to Main St., seem to be routine lately. Pax traveling to and from JFK, should allow LOTS of extra time.
[It seems, that new lanes and ramps are being built to link the southern section of the VW to the northern section; they may be adding lanes north of Kew Gardens--probably followed by extra lanes for the approach to KG from the north(???).]
