they don't check the time you come back to the airport.
at check-in, the airline will look to see your departing flight, and that it is within 72 hours. As part of the check-in process, the check-in airline will also (usually) communicate directly to china that you are intending to arrive and avail yourself of TWOV.
at immigration in china, they will look to see your departing flight and that it is within 72 hours.
Chinese immigration are pretty switched on. They will know if you are departing on flight XX to the USA, what time that flight is scheduled to depart. Although rare, it is not unknown for immigration to confirm with your departing carrier you have space on the flight you say you do.
