I think it's somewhat age-dependent. Younger people generally have a better command of English, and therefore are more willing (and likely) to switch, whereas older folks may not be as comfortable and are perfectly happy to carry on in German.

Switzerland, on the other hand, is an entirely different animal should you ever decide to travel there.
