German Attitudes Towards Non-Native Speakers
Next week will be my first visit to Germany. I studied the German language in high school and two additional years in college. I believe I have a strong enough command of the language to have a decent conversation with a minor error, here or there.
I imagine it will not be difficult for German natives to recognize that I'm American. Will they quickly shift the conversation to English, when they realize I am an English speaker?
When I speak with native Spanish speakers, they're ammused by my mistakes in speaking their language, but are encouraged by my attempts, and even offer to help me learn more.
I would like to practice my German when there, and would hope they don't immediately shift to English when they realize my German is not perfect.
