I could not agree more, I'm flying Egyptair every second week or so (by lack of choice, rather than design) between Africa and Europe and I have NEVER seen anyone bringing his own alcohol on-board or consuming it openly in the Cairo lounge. I'm pretty sure you could get away with it, but I'm equally sure it is not welcomed by either the company or most fellow passengers.
