Do you mean A319/A320 aircraft? (UA doesn't have any A321 aircraft.) The slimline seats on different United aircraft are different, but I agree the A320s are not terribly comfortable. I actually like the firm, upright backs, but the seat part and leg space is awful on just about all the different versions I have tried.

As the OP mentioned, the problem for anyone with much stomach is not just using a laptop, it's putting the tray table in its lowered position. I don't have this particular issue on Southwest aircraft, but I have had the issue on a couple foreign airlines where the slimline seats have been in use a bit longer.
