I don't know how many of you watched the entire piece, but it's really a much broader indictment than just the manufacturing flaws in the South Carolina plant.

The basic theme is that the merger with McDonnell-Douglas caused a shift in the corporate culture at Boeing away from engineering excellence to a more bottom-line oriented approach.

There is no question that the hidden camera segments with the workers at the South Carolina plant are very troubling, from the allegations of crudely shoddy workmanship, to what is presented as open drug use by a very low skilled workforce.

But the ultimate indictment is of Boeing management which in its unquenchable drive to maximize big profits has ended up not only potentially creating serious safety hazards but has also piled on literally billions of dollars in cost as its outsourcing project ended up failing and costing the company both time and money.

Even the low-wage plant in South Carolina has essentially been a major failure. Not only was the plant expensive to build, but the fact that so much of the work done there has to be revised in Everett means that any (if not all) of the cost savings have been illusory.

All in all, a cautionary tale of the excesses of the ruthless modern American corporate culture.
