But you know that won't be the case because a third-party app. won't be able to access the "Secure Element" chip that Apple is using to store the virtualized credit card tokens.

Sounds like they couldn't make deals with credit card companies, probably because they couldn't agree to fees and liability issues.

But most of the purchases at these stores are with credit cards or not? Maybe not at Wal Mart but can't imagine people are using mostly debit cards, cash or checks at BB.
The WSJ article seemed to indicate that the app won't store credit cards at all, just loyalty/gift cards and coupons. In other words, another Passbook or Google Wallet clone sans card support.

At least the mobile industry here learned from the CDMA/GSM fiasco early this century and have all chosen LTE for wireless technology this time around.
