Refund of APD on missed connection? (And claiming reimbursement for technical delay)
Hi all, first post and not sure if this is the most appropriate forum but hope someone may be able to give me some advice.
I travelled recently on a Royal Brunei ticket from Auckland to London, then BA from Heathrow to Glasgow. I booked my ticket with a travel agent for the AKL-LHR leg, purchased on a Royal Brunei fare using Qantas from AKL-MEL, then Royal Brunei from MEL-LHR (via Brunei and Dubai). I separately purchased the LHR-GLA ticket on Expedia NZ, to fly from LHR 6 hours after the scheduled arrival of the Royal Brunei flight into LHR (giving what I assumed would be plenty of time to make the connection...).
While in Dubai, the Royal Brunei flight developed a technical problem and was delayed for 24 hours. As a result i had to miss my BA flight from LHR-GLA. When I eventually arrived into LHR one day later than planned, I booked a flight up to Glasgow that same day. The cost was 165GBP, whereas my original ticket booked for the previous day was 70GBP.
I tried to claim back the cost of the additional ticket that I booked on arrival to LHR, but both my travel insurer and the airline (Royal Brunei) have rejected this. They both say that the other party is liable (I don't really care who is liable, just that someone can refund me for the cost i incurred through no fault of my own!).
My question is twofold:
1) Do you frequent flyers think that I have a good case to get my additional flight reimbursed, and who bears the responsibility for this, the airline or insurer?
2) Should i at least be able to claim back the tax and fees for the original LHR-GLA booking that I missed due to the delay, since I never travelled on that fare and I believe taxes only apply if you go on the flight.
Any advice/comments greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot :-)
