I say they can press for a 300$ voucher each, if escalated correctly.
Next day flight, missed work, lost income, their bosses aren't understanding this wasn't there fault.....

Definitely press for a hotel voucher (or reimbursement for hotel, taxi, etc) if they were stranded plus extra compensation in the form of a travel voucher. How much to ask for? I guess that depends on the circumstances.
