I am guilty of having done this.
Likewise, non-stop PVG-SIN flights are almost never delayed but I still choose to transit in HKG for the simple reason of earning mileage and paying only half the fare of SQ. To earning 100% mileage with SQ I have to pay twice the airfare and pay for simple things like extra legroom seats.
