I checked a bag 4hr 30min before departure from EWR to MDW last month. When checking the bag the kiosk would not allow and said I could not check a bag more than 4 hours before the flight. I asked the Southwest agent to assist and she checked the bag no problem.
I had the exact same thing at STL last fall when checking in a bag at T-4:15. The WN employees mentioned that 15 minutes before hand is not that big of a deal, but I would bet that kind of leeway given would depend on the airport or even the individual employees.
