I have learnt not to carry alcohol in my checked luggage. I once had a litre of the finest scotch that I decanted into a plastic nalgene bottle (AKA a hikers water bottle). This was stashed in the middle of my back pack. Unfortunately the straps of my backpack snagged the conveyor system causing a jam that both bent and ripped my back pack. The bottle was squashed and liberated its contents throughout my luggage. All was wrapped in dripping plastic when I collected my gear at AMS. It smelt terrible. Fortunately, my back pack was replaced (I bought a new one and BA refunded the full cost). Lesson learnt. Oh, sleeping in a scotch infused sleeping bag is not much fun!
Unfortunately you don't have a choice if you are flying but to put it in a checked bag unless you are flying international and buy it at Duty Free in your departure city (they sell Orange Truffle Bailey's and Biscotti Bailey's at LHR duty free and I am so thankful that I can buy it at duty free since the bottles are too big to fit in a wine diapers and would make a mess if they were to break in my luggage and not to mention my bags are usually packed with no spare room on international trips) or you are using minis.

I really recommend wine diapers if you are travelling with wine or alcohol:

They take up a lot less room in your luggage than a packaging box and if the wine bottle would happen to break the padding absorbs all the wine and wont ruin your luggage or anything else in it. They won't work for Bailey's bottles but work fine for Vodka bottles and I'm sure they would for scotch as well. In addition to the bottle getting broken, I am always scared when flying with a sweet wine the wine might freeze and the bottle will break (I was flying on an international flight one time and when I asked for a glass of dessert wine with the dessert course I was told they didn't have that kind because they had stored it on dry ice and the wine froze and the bottle cracked creating a mess) and the wine diaper will absorb the wine if that happens where a box won't. The other thing to do is if you are at winery is to get one of their wine cases and check the wine as a different bag.
