Further info:
The male end, when put through a car seat's mounting areas, is JUST long enought to basically end up smack in the middle of the seat. Most don't have a channel/grove to flush mount the female buckle, so when you buckle the two ends up, it's right in the middle pressing into their backs.
I'm guessing whoever designed the seat belts knew they could bother kids and probably likes them as much as most of us who travel....
