So in order to maximise my chances, I should obey the following rules:

1) Book full-fare economy.
2) Check MMB in the time between booking (usually a couple of weeks for me) and checking in at the airport.
3) When checking in, ask if there are any discounted cash upgrades.
4) Cross my fingers for op-up.
