It really depends on the company. United, for instance, are intentionally trying to reduce the expected service level in the industry and in frequent flyer programs. They're aware that their FF's hate it.

That said, they can track things better through big data elements of dollars spent per elite, elite membership rolls, $/seat, changes in flight volumes, etc. At a high level, the opinions of individual people don't mean a lot.
