Jury Clears Businessman Who Forgot Gun In His Briefcase
A federal jury today acquitted a Colorado businessman of trying to board an airplane with a handgun packed in his briefcase.
Douglas E. Miller, 65, of Highland, Colo., said he packed the .38-caliber revolver months before and had forgotten about it when he went to board a flight at Omaha's Eppley Airfield on November 10.
Miller was arrested after security workers found the gun buried beneath paperwork. He said he started carrying the gun last year after he was harassed while trying to change a flat tire.
Prosecutors said heightened security at airports after the September 11 attacks should have triggered Miller's memory about the gun.
