Buy a new bag yourself, keep the receipt and claim on your travel insurance. Tell the insurance company that the bag given to you as a replacement for your damaged bag was not fit for purpose. Explain why.

In future, if you need to leave a bag at the airport and cannot check it in, use the airport's left luggage facility if there is one.
