There were already other mechanisms for that - including the (other boneheaded) change to make an Airbuck purchasable for a NZ-buck through OneSmart.

IMHO standby upgrades should exist for both GE and G. That one simple change would do a lot to keep people happy.
They should be possible for any Airpoints member - as an aspirational award I am sure there is or was some interest. Of course, now that 1Airbuck=1NZbuck there's a problem, again caused by lack of thinking about how to actually leverage the FFP and what it did for the business.

The thinking behind OneUp continues to flummox me.
