CX and AA have very different sets of rules even if you book under AA codeshare. AA seems to promote more on their own metal via DFW or via NRT on JL codeshare over CX codeshare. Which means if you book HKG-ORD-NYC-HKG all on AA flight numbers, the fare is a lot higher than solely CX.
For ex-HKG fares, you need to contact a local TA to piece this routing for you on CX.
What I suggest is book HKG-ORD / NYC-HKG. And just buy a ORD-NYC sector on AA. It will be much cheaper.
