This is frequently noted here. Airports have the discretion to do pretty much anything for you, if they so wish. That's why there are so many situations (eg overslept and missed flight) where turning up at the airport to plead for mercy is much more likely to get leniency than phoning the call centre.

I wish I had a pound for every thread on here started by someone who rants about how they overslept and missed their flight but the call centre wouldn't show any flexibility. The call centre's got no idea whether or not you're lying through your teeth.
