It's not all bad. I met my current fiancée on the CLL website. Of course I met a few ladies who were only interested in having ONS and some who are obviously running scams. But I never spent a single cent until I flew to China and met her parents.
The common takeaway for most China girls is that those running scams (like being married but say they are not) or those out for a non-serious mianzi relationship with a laowai will never bring you to their home to meet their parents. Alarm bells should go off once she keep putting off or finding reasons not to bring you to her hometown to meet her folks.
