The reason is that I'm going to buy AA tickets with my aa miles but need proof of the cash price since I'm getting reimbursement for this travel. They are aware that I'm doing this.
If a hold is offered, then there is no 24 hour cancel.
If you just need documentation of the cash price, put the ticket on hold. AA will email you a copy of the itinerary showing flights & dates, and the hold price. Then just cancel the hold and rebook with your miles. Use the first email for your expenses.
As an aside, the IRS might consider the "reimbursement" as taxable income, since it'snot directly paying for travel; and the cost of the ticket paid for with miles is not deductible, since (in general) there's $0 basis for the miles.
