I don't think this is true. I recently booked an award ticket on a TA Swiss flight operated by Edelweiss using UA miles. I don't quite understand the relationship between Edelweiss and Swiss, but I don't believe it's the same kind of arrangement as Lufthansa with Germanwings, for example, which results in different mileage accrual and usage options in Star Alliance. It's odd that the UA site doesn't even mention Edelweiss, but I think the booking class for Swiss should determine the earnings if you can book awards on Edelweiss operated flights at the same mileage rates as Swiss.
