It is really not that bad. I have taken AB/HG intra-Europe in many configurations and it is pretty consistently just fine. The only problems, as noted elsewhere, are with luggage at TXL. Rome to Zurich is a long and boring (but beautiful) train ride and I certainly wouldn't skip AB if time was the issue.
